Blog for Tuesday

[20-May 2014 Amazon River]

WOW. what a Tuesday. We were invited to and enjoyed a great breakfast given by the local municipality. Some of the sweetest fruit I have ever tasted. Then back to the boat to begin meeting and treating patients that had already begun lining up before 6:00 AM.

We met and treated hundreds of people. Kind, loving, lovely, gentle people that we have all fallen in love with. There are great opportunities to love and serve these children of God, and they despite waiting up to 12 hours to be seen and many who need to return tomorrow. They are gentle, and grateful. Happy for the attention given to each and every one of them, adults and children alike.

Jim Nold, Glynn Wells and Kevin Smallwood began to receive patients. Fred Parker served in the dental clinic pulling teeth and doing fillings along with 2 Brazilian dentists. Getting organized and getting into a rhythm took a while but WOW what a committed, talented and compassionate group of professionals have shown up both from Brazil and from Mountain.

Maybe even a tougher job was undertaken by the nurses in our midst. They had the delicate and difficult responsibility of Triage. Difficult under any circumstances, multiplied by a small language barrier. Portuguese is different.

Another part of the team was employed in outreach and children's ministries..face painting, balloons, manicures and pedicures (sign me up), bible distribution including great resources for the children and in many cases taking care of and loving children whose parents were waiting on medical attention.

Each person that visits has been given a bible ( these cost a minimum of $10.00 in Brazil) and we are praying with just about everybody and praising God for what He is showing us and is allowing us to see and participate in.

The list of needs is long and the medical help available locally seems to be overwhelmed and under resourced. Example many folk with diabetes have their blood tested at the local hospital...some commented that it has been weeks since the local medical service had the supplies to do blood sugar tests. Compare that with my dad who tested his blood sugar every day at home....distribution issues!
Pray for us. Wednesday promises to be a great day. God is good and we pray that the name of Jesus will be glorified in all that we do.
