Kenya team update Friday 6.27.14

Today was our last day of VBS at Pangani. It was amazing to see the whole team rally for the last day. Pastor Tom started the day with John 17 and encouraged us to be unified in Christ as we taught. Pastor Alex our friendly Brazilian pastor, brought the energy and got everyone singing “New York” on the ride to the school, followed by some dancing to “Happy.”  We all decided to enter a friendly competition to see who could have the loudest class, which pumped everyone up even more.  The classes ran smooth and you could hear every class singing and yelling the bible verse.  The kids left every room excited and singing.

It is always great to see the kids excited and happy.  It was really great to see my sponsor child, Eric, happy and running around.  He found me several times throughout the day just to say “Hi” and give me a hug.  He introduced me to his cousin and some of his friends.  By the end of the day, his whole class knew who I was and when I walked to his floor, they ran to get him.  It is awesome to see how happy these kids are and how much of a difference sponsoring them actually makes.

The afternoon started off a little delayed and our schedule a little tighter than normal, which meant we had to get everything done in less time.  It seemed a little impossible at first, but after we decided to just give it to God and have fun letting Him have control the day went awesome.  We had a blast with the kids and ended up with extra time!  It is awesome to see how giving control to God allows things to run smoother than we could ever understand or imagine.

The kids at Pangani gave us a going away party.  They sang songs and did traditional African dancing.  They are amazing.  They gave us some going away gifts, which was great, but it was incredible to see how happy they are just from the little bit of time we had with them.  I came here thinking I was going to bring them something and in the end they taught me more and poured me joy into me  than I think I did into them.

God never promised life would be easy, he only promised a hope and a future.  I often wondered how these kids would have that hope and future, and now I know.  After spending a week teaching the kids that Jesus is the light of the world, I truly see that he is their light in the darkness of the Mathare Valley and Missions of Hope is spreading that light, giving these kids hope and a chance at a future.
