We had our orientation this morning and heard about the beginnings of MOHI from Mary Kamau. I had heard the story many times myself, but I hung on every word just like many on my team who heard it for the first time. The story never gets old, for it is a story of faith and hope of a woman who has shaped countless generations in Kenya and around the world. Her example of faith helped remind us that simple acts of faith change the world.
If the morning was held by us being amazed by the story of an amazing woman, the afternoon was filled with us taking in the sights of Mathare Valley and the main center of MOHI at Pangani. We were taken in by the joys of Mathare Valley, (the smiling and laughter of the children, for example), but also the sadness of the Valley. Our hearts were broken by the things that break God’s heart, whether that was the hardness of hearts towards God or seeing poverty in a way many of us had never seen before. In taking in the tour of MOHI, our hearts were overcome with joy at the marvelous work God is doing through MOHI. This thing called MOHI is all God-driven, and sustained by the hands of the living God. As Chris Tomlin says in his song, “God of This City”,“For greater things have yet to come and greater things are still to be done in this city.”
Tomorrow we start our first day of VBS. Pray that Christ’s love be may be our response to these children, that love will find a way in us to be the hands of feet of Christ.
