A note from Jerry Addicks:
This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity as all the men did, to attend a luncheon for men at the White River Apache Christian Church. I sat at a table with a fellow about 30 years old, named Eddison, who has a history of drug and alcohol addiction. Eddison just got out of jail; while he was there someone gave him a copy of the New Testament. Eddison, in spite of his rough-looking nature and many tattoos, confessed to me that jail scared him and that he wanted to get his life straight. He also wanted to get a large print Bible, as he has some sight difficulties. He gave me his cell number, and I promised him I would come up with one for him. On Wednesday, I went to the Lutheran Church book store and picked one up. I contacted Pastor Pete from the Apache Christian Church, and he said he thought getting Eddison a Bible was a great idea and wanted to go with me to give it to him.
Thus began the wildest mouse ride in my life in the church's fifteen passenger van. Pastor Pete would make most NASCAR drivers succumb to fear in just a few short blocks. After a couple of stops, we tracked down Eddison and presented him with a large print bible (See picture below). He seemed very happy to receive it, and he promised to stay straight and stay in the word. Pastor Pete and I prayed for Eddison. I will continue to stay in contact with Addison through Pastor Pete. Pete asked me to stay with him and we began with a tour of some really rough neighborhoods. We visited old Apache families, two meth houses, and several other stops along the way. He would say that 'now you would not want to be on this street after dark.' Pete knew everyone along the way, as he wheeled this fifteen-passenger around the streets like it was a sports car. Pastor Pete has a love and passion for the Apache people, which is present with a smile on his face and a friendly wave. He is always willing to help. As we parted, he said 'I love these people, and sometimes I just don't know why.' Wow, what a testimony to God's love!
