On Tuesday, the men went to the Men’s Recovery Luncheon. Here is a note from Larry Ament:
“The men attended a Men’s Recovery Luncheon at White Mountain Apache Christian Church. Pastor Pete took us on a wild van ride through the immediate neighborhood picking up men to bring them back to the church for the luncheon. There were about 30 men there altogether. Matt, Pastor Pete’s assistant, gave a short sermon on creation and how we all have our own God-given tools to do the job correctly. Afterwards, we all settled down to eat. We had a chance to talk to several of the men who were very open and honest as to why they were there. The luncheon is held every Tuesday, which gives the men a chance to have a hot meal and hear the word of Christ. After the luncheon was over, we prayed with some of the men until it was time for us to go.”
While the men were at the luncheon, the women spent time with a young girl from the Apache tribe. We were able to bond with her, and get to know her. She informed us about her culture, friends, and school. Meredith even talked to her about visiting a college. I thought it was neat that the missionaries are trying to help the Apache tribe as much as possible. Later on, we had the missionaries over for dinner. We exchanged stories throughout our day. We watched the movie “Dinner with a Perfect Stranger” as well. This movie was about a woman who had a surprise dinner with Jesus. Jesus was able to present His loving character to her. Then, we had a devotion about faith, and the meaning of faith. It was neat how the bible scriptures that we read resembled what was said in the movie. We were able to reflect back to the movie when we discussed ways to stay faithful to God.
On Wednesday, we got up early to go hiking with a missionary intern. We hiked a few miles, and stopped for lunch. Jean Priebe presented a devotion about being present in the moment. We are often focused on our past and future. We are anxious about what may happen in the future. Jean asked us how we can focus on the present moments. We were able to discuss different prayers to soothe our minds. It was enjoyable to just enjoy God’s creation and good discussions. It was nice to connect with each other on a spiritual and deep level. We have been able to open up and tell each other our stories. During this trip, we have been able to support each other, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It is neat to see how we have been able to develop a special bond.
Throughout the trip, we are doing “missionary love” nights. We are giving them encouragement, and listening to their stories. After the trip, we are thinking about sponsoring some of the missionaries here in Arizona. We are excited to see what God has in store for the missionaries and the Apache reservation.
