"You will remember me?"

Our apologies that it’s been a couple of days since our last blog.  Each day is so very full!  To catch you up…
On Monday and Tuesday we did home visits.  We spent time with women who are all now part of the CHE program.  Through MOHI’s generosity, they have received a micro-finance and started a business with a team of women who’ve pooled their meager earnings to support one another.  These women are often HIV positive and cast off and/or abused by their husbands.  Often these women are required to raise orphaned children or children fathered by their husbands with other women along with their own children.  These small businesses are all they have to provide for these children.  It was our joy and privilege to visit the homes of these women to fellowship and pray with them.  We were also blessed to support their businesses by purchasing their lovely handcrafted items.  All of our home visits were led by Mary Kilonzi who truly serves as the hands and feet of Jesus, offering truth and love in the Mathare Valley.

Perhaps it goes without saying that one could easily become somewhat bitter toward the men involved but in contrast we have been privileged to meet several godly men who honor their wives and their Lord through their words and conduct.  One such man was our driver, Willington, who also often served as our teacher and pastor.  We will carry his gracious and humble spirit with us.

Looking back at our teen conference in Joska, we recall our rather tumultuous drive out to the campus.  This journey doesn’t begin to compare, however, with the horrendous life journey these girls have experienced before their arrival at Joska.  Joska houses the children who most need to be removed from their homes for their safety and well-being.  Joska serves not only as a school for these girls but also as a safe haven from the horrors that await many of them in the slums.  MOHI has worked tirelessly to create a beautiful environment in which the girls can flourish.  The girls are then responsible for maintaining the center along with their dorms and clothing.  Their day begins at 5:30 AM 7 days a week and their schedules are kept full until 7:00 PM devotions.  As prepared as we were, we allowed the Holy Spirit to direct our time and have been blessed in following his lead, allowing time to just BE with these girls who are so far away from their homes before their teen years.  We heard so often, “You will remember me?”  and indeed we will.

Although we believed we loved our sponsored children before we came, the experience of looking into their eyes and holding them increased our love immeasurably.  We cannot express fully enough the importance of sponsoring children through MOHI because we have experienced first hand the tremendous impact this ministry is having bringing light to what can only be described as one of the darkest places on this earth.  If you can and are willing to transform the life of a child in desperate need, please visit www.cmfi.org/childsponsorship
