Buenos dias from cabin 120 at La Malinche. Our apologies for not sending an update sooner, our first 2 days have been a whirlwind. On travel day we had a tight connection in Atlanta and they had already closed the boarding door while we were using the bathroom. Charlie was super persuasive and they thankfully opened the door and let us onto the plane. Once in Mexico City we were greeted so warmly with hugs by Tica who guided us onto the buses. When we arrived in Puebla we met up with Cortney and Carla and they took us for brunch with some of the students. When first entering El Pozo (Casa Verde) all of the students also greeted us warmly and were very excited we were there and conversation immediately started flowing , with a little bit of awkward silence at times. They had put together goodie bags with local snacks for us to try as well. Later that evening when all the students came together for a meal we had tacos el pastor for dinner. Seeing the room come alive with conversation was so amazing, the best conversations often happen around a (very large) table. After a good nights rest we started day 2 with team time reflecting on our time so far, spending some time doing a devotional that spoke about how Jesus was tempted but did not give in and that challenged us to reflect on how we may be tempted today and spoiler alert were tempted. We then had breakfast with the missionaries here (we had chilaquiles which were amazing. Had to try them a la bandera, red and green salsa). Our day was spent prepping for the retreat and once we got on the bus we were able to chill out a little… or so we thought. Our 1.5 hour bus ride turned into 6.5 hours. The bus driver took the route that was not meant for buses so after traversing streets not meant for buses in small towns, taking out a live power line, backing into a street post, and many tree branches we made it back down to a road we could traverse with the bus. We started on one side of the volcano and ended up entering on the other. At this point we were joking that we were like the Israelites in the wilderness walking in a circle lost for 40 years or 4 hours. On our way back up the mountain the bus driver sideswiped a car in a small street and we thought surley there couldn’t be anymore road blocks. We finally made it to the entrance and wouldn’t you know we hit another road block and this time it was literally a blocked road. Tica and Carla got out of the bus and had to persuade the guard to let us through because we were 4.5 hours too late to get in. We finally made it all to our cabins and fellowshipped a little more with our new roomies and immediately found commonality/connection with their story of coming to know Christ. What an awesome God to bring us all this way, calling us to trust Him that He would get us here despite the roadblocks(literally). We are well rested and very cold on this beautiful morning, ready for the day! Love yall!
We had a great time in Puebla meeting the team and students the first night
We left for the retreat on the Bus at 4:30pm(local). Was supposed to be a 1.5hr ride, long story short, it took 6hr. We made it to the retreat late last night, got some rest and are now ready for a full day on Malinche (an inactive volcano).
James and Brandon helped get all the tech supplies set up while the rest of the team helped pack up snacks, game supplies and for the retreat yesterday afternoon! It's great to be WITH our brothers and sisters in Christ here in Puebla!
