Bom Dia from
the Brazil team! We are currently in the car on the way to Serra Grande for our
last VBS of the week. Yesterday was our last day doing VBS in the city of
Pianco. Our days consisted of a puppet show in the morning, which told the
story and theme of the day, then we would all eat some lunch before starting
face painting, hair cutting, nail painting, game playing, etc. A funny moment
from yesterday had to do with the face painting station. So as most of you
know, Amy and Tom are the only ones that speak Portuguese on our team, so when
the kids would come to Becca and I for face painting, we would do our best to
understand what they wanted us to paint. A kid had come to Becca asking for her
to paint “flamingo”. So, she asked our Brazilian friend Tiago if she was
understanding the kid correctly. He didn’t fully understand what Becca was
trying to say to him either so he said, “yes, flamingo, like the black and red
flamingo.” Becca was obviously confused at this, so the kid decided to go to
our other Brazilian friend,Vini, for the face painting. After Vini painted what
the kid had asked for, we realized that “flamingo” is the name of a Brazilian
soccer team… It would have been funny (and disappointing for the kid) if Becca
would have painted a pink bird on a kid that wanted a Brazilian soccer team
flag. After a long day of VBS we drove back to the hotel to get ready for a
midweek church service. Before we left, Becca and I went outside to a take a
quick picture of the sunset. The owner of the hotel saw that we were doing this
and asked if we wanted to go on the roof to get a better view. So we did and
wow it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. In America we can
get so caught up in the fear and danger of the moment that we don’t even stop
to look at the beauty all around us. This was for sure one of the highlights of
my trip. After that we went to the church service and got to see the Brazilian
half of our team lead worship. They asked some of us to come up and sing a song
in English. We sang “How He Loves” and “How Great is Our God”. During both of
these songs, all of the Brazilians joined in and sang in Portuguese. It was so
beautiful to see the church all come together as one to sing and lift up the
name of the Lord, no matter what language we spoke. Our teammate Linda was able
to share her testimony and our Brazilian teammate Ed was able to preach during
this service. After that, at around 9:30, we ate some dinner at a place nearby
that had some American food (woohoo). A bunch of people from the church joined
us and it was just a good time of fellowship with our brothers and sisters. We
ended our night with that, so we could have enough energy to wake up today for
yet another day of loving on some kids.
